São todas pinturas, óleo sobre linho. Damien Loeb produz aquilo que se pode chamar de Melodrama Fotorealista.

Mr. Loeb produces what you might call Photorealist Melodrama. There is not much action in his paintings, but he has a cinematographer’s eye for suspenseful scenes.

J. Bennett Fitts conceived of these works as a response to Lewis Baltz’ striking 1970’s series of photographs of Irvine warehouses. Fitts expands on the theme of the strangely manicured, isolated space; manufactured environments that seem to quantify the human experience of literal space and how it is utilized as an oddly dissociative landscape where all trace of human interaction is missing. Instead what we find in these images are representations of the natural world codified and contained within the corporate agenda.

These buildings seem to have been designed for the “low impact visual experience,” meaning their appearance is deliberately innocuous. The landscape also reflects this same sense of disconnection and manicured precision as lone trees punctuate the otherwise bland surroundings. Lone trees appear almost as afterthoughts, isolated representations of nature thrown in for good measure.

J. Bennett Fitts has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally and his work is included in many notable collections, as well as being widely reviewed.

Espaço de Exposições, 7 de Julho a 31 de Agosto 2009

O Museu Nacional de Arte, Arquitectura e Desenho da Noruega produziu a Exposição "Contemporary Norwegian Architecture 2000-2005" que inaugurará no próximo dia 7 de Julho no Espaço de Exposições da Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto, com o apoio da Real Embaixada da Noruega.

Comissariada por Anne Marit Lunde e Eva Madshus, a Exposição apresenta uma selecção de 50 das mais importantes obras da Arquitectura Contemporânea Norueguesa, construídas entre 2000 e 2005, e divide-se em cinco categorias: Transformação, Forma e Função, Símbolo e Identidade, Materiais e Construções, Contraste e Proximidade. Cada obra é apresentada em fotografia e desenho, acompanhados por um texto explicativo em inglês, sendo algumas também representadas em filme e maquete.

Um dos mais destacados nomes presentes nesta mostra é o Gabinete Snøhetta, distinguido com o Prémio Mies van der Rohe 2009 pela Ópera de Oslo e também autores da Biblioteca de Alexandria e do Pavilhão da Serpentine Gallery em Londres.
O seu director, Kjetil Thorsen, deslocar-se-á à Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto para proferir a conferência que marcará a inauguração da Exposição, às 18 horas do dia 7 de Julho.

É um senhor Sueco que eu estudei por trabalhar com superfícies "developables" - superfícies com curvatura gaussiana igual a zero, ou seja, que podem ser "achatadas" sem distorção (p.e. compressão ou esticamento). Imaginem o papel, que pode ser moldado numa só direcção de cada vez, não possuindo elasticidade...

I had visited it before because I found out this Swedish guy made a project using "developable" surfaces - surfaces with zero Gaussian curvature, which can be flattened without distortion (i.e. compression or stretching). Picture paper: you can mold it and fold it, but only one direction at the time, because it does not have elasticity...

Greg Lynn acabou o curso com mérito na Miami University (OH) com licenciatura em Arquitectura e Filosofia, e na Princeton University com um Mestrado em Arquitectura. Ele distingue-se pelo uso de desenho assistido por computador produzindo, formas arquitecturais biomórficas, ao explicar que com o uso de computadores, o cálculo pode ser implementado na geração de expressão arquitectural.
Lynn ensinou na Columbia Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation e na ETH Zurich. Antes de iniciar o seu próprio atelier, Greg Lynn trabalhou nos ateliers de Peter Eisenman e Antoine Predock.

Greg Lynn graduated cum laude from Miami University (OH) with degrees in Architecture and Philosophy, and Princeton University with a Master of Architecture. He is distinguished for his use of computer-aided design to produce irregular, biomorphic architectural forms, as he proposes that with the use of computers, calculus can be implemented into the generation of architectural expression. Prior to starting his own firm, Greg Lynn worked in the offices of Peter Eisenman and Antoine Predock.

Meninos e meninas... eu admito, odeio documentários ambientalistas, muito pelo tom paternalista com que apresentam os factos, muitas vezes negligênciando condições sociais e individuais presas à era que atravessamos. Por isso "Uma Verdade Inconveniente" tornou-se para mim inconveniente em muito mais que uma maneira.

No entanto fui apresentado a um documentário realizado por Yann Arthus-Bertrand, co-produzido por Luc Besson (O quinto elemento, Léon, Nikita, Taxi, etc) e com a voz de Glenn Close como narradora na versão Inglesa. Diz lá que o filme "é constituído por paisagens aéreas do mundo inteiro e pretende sensibilizar a opinião pública mundial sobre a necessidade de alterar modos e hábitos de vida a fim de evitar uma catástrofe ecológica planetária." Tá bem...
Não deixa de marcar uma das primeiras grandes produções a serem estreadas mundialmente no Youtube, e de graça.

Boys and Girls... I admit, guilty as charged, I hate environmentalist documentaries much for its paternalistic tone with which they present their facts often disregarding social and individual conditions attached to the Era we're going through.That's how "An Inconvenient Truth" became incovenient in so many ways for me.

Nevertheless I was introduced to a documentary directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, co-produced by Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, Léon, Nikita, Taxi, etc) and with Glenn Close as narrator in the English version. It says in the site that "with areal footage from 54 countries, Home is a depiction of how the Earth's problems are all interlinked." Ok I guess... whatever...

Mas uma certeza vos dou: as imagens são das mais belas que se pode imaginar. Pode-se assistir ao filme no Youtube até 14 de Junho. Ou então saquem com a ajuda do add-on para o firefox "Download Helper". Mas de uma maneira ou de outra façam-no em alta definição carregando no botão "HD" a vermelho. É um bom exemplo de "verdadeira" alta definição em stream. E se tiverem monitores capazes disso (tu tens foy, que eu sei) usem e abusem. É BRUTAL... Com 800 votos numa semana tem uma cotação de 8.4 no IMDb. Ou então... peçam-me que eu já saquei em mp4 (quase 2 gigas).

Or download it with the help of Firefox Add-On "Download Helper" (pun intended). One way or another do it in High Definition by pressing the red "HD" button. It's a good example of "true" stream high def. And if you have a capable monitor the use and abuse it. With one week of votes it has reached 8.4 in IMDb's scale.

Podem assistir em Português de Portugal (a pronuncia é um quito estranha... mas pode ser divertido, não sei, talvez, quem sabe...), no original em Inglês, ou em Francês (já que é feito em França, a versão francesa deve ser a mais fidedigna a seguir à inglesa). Ou então também existe em Espanhol e Alemão para os mais picuinhas.

Eu tinha visto à venda na Casa da Música uns kits de "caixa de musica" que me despertaram um desejo de as possuir. Mas o preço é proibitivo - 80€... Um dia resolvi procurar na net e reparei que eram extremamente baratas online nos EUA - 14$ - mas os portes de envio aumentavam o preço pra 30$ e poucos. Foi então que pensei que talvez pudesse comprar de uma loja sediada na união europeia e foi aí que encontrei a mesma caixa de música no Grand Illusions, à venda por 17£, e com portes reduzidos a brincadeira ficou-me por cerca de 24€ - muito longe dos 80 que a Casa da Musica pede.

I had seen a "music box kit" for sale at the Casa da Musica Shop. But the price there was too hight - 80€. One day I decided to search it on the internet and I noticed they were extremelly cheat in the USA - 14$ - but the sending fees were expensive. I thought there must be a place in the EU I could get it, and I was right. I found the same "Teanola" music box for sale at Grand Illusions - 17£ - so with the all the fees it came down to 24€ - far from the 80 at Casa da Musica.

A caixinha vem com uma tira pré programada e duas em branco. Depois de as utilizar e não me apetecendo comprar mais, desenhei um template e imprimi. Depois fiz a transcrição do Davy Jones' Theme (ou este) do filme Pirates of the Caribean: At World's End. Está longe de estar perfeito, mas deixo aqui um video e o pdf para quem tiver uma caixa de musica destas, pode sacar e imprimir.

The little "box" comes with a pre-programmed paper strip and to blank ones. After using the blank ones I decided to make my own instead of buying more. I made a template which I share here. I also share the transcript I made of Davy Jones' Theme (or here) from Pirates of the Caribean: At World's End. As ruas da Baixa do Porto contam muitas vezes histórias desenhadas pela mãos de jovens artistas. Ricardo Dias é o autor do tsuru, o símbolo que tem preenchido as paredes da cidade.

O Porto têm um novo ícone: Um origami branco, em forma de pássaro, é a mais recente intervenção artística nas paredes da zona histórica. Depois do "±" do graffiter Caos, da Mona Lisa em stencil, das bicicletas e do "cospe aqui" de artistas anónimos, as fachadas e ruas do centro do Porto são agora preenchidas por uma ave branca numerada.

Streets in downtown Oporto tell a lot of stories drawn by the hands of young artists. Ricardo Dias is the author of the Tsuru, the symbol which had been filling the city walls.

Oporto has a new icon: a white origami, shaped like a bird is the most recent artistic intervension in the historical area walls. After the graffiter Caos' "±", the stencil Mona Lisa, the bycicles and the "spit here" made by anonymous artists, the facades and streets of inner Porto are now filled by a numbered white bird.

Como é norma, os autores dos projectos desenvolvidos na rua receiam revelar-se, por receio de represálias leais. Por isso, gostam de de manter algum secretismo associado às suas iniciativas. Ainda assim, Ricardo Dias, de 29 anos, escultor, não deixa de reconhecer como seus os quase mil origami que têm vindo a colorir as ruas do Porto.

No Japão, "o tsuru é um pássaro que tem uma simbologia esotérica", esclarece Ricardo. Reza a lenda que, ao fim de mil tsuru de origami feitos, o desejo que a pessoa pedir, realiza-se. "É um símbolo da felicidade eterna, da prosperidade e da longevidade", razões que levaram o jovem a dar uma nova roupagem ao conceito. Começou a fazer desenhos em stencil pelas paredes do Porto, todos numerados, precisamente porque quer atingir a meta de mil origamis.

As usual the authors of street wise projects are afraid of revealing themselves because of legal suits. Even so, 29 years old sculptor Ricardo Dias is eager to recognizes as his the almost thousand origami which have came to colour Oporto streets.

In Japan "the tsuru (crane) is a bird with an esoteric symbology" explains Ricardo. The legend says that after 1000 tsuri are done you will get one wish fulfilled. "It's a symbol of eternal happyness, of prosperity and longevity" reasons that took the youngster to revamp the concept. He started making drawings with stencils, all numbered, precicelly because he wants to reach the goal of one thousand origami.

Quanto ao desejo pedido fica reservado aos segredos do jovem escultor. Desvenda, no entanto, que acredita "no poder da lenda" e que, se desenhou o primeiro tsuru no centro do Porto, onde vive há muito tempo, pretende pintar o derradeiro elemento da série - o número mil - numa das avenidas do Rio de Janeiro, onde nasceu.

Reza a história que uma pequena criança (de nome sadako) vítima do ataque nuclear de hiroshima começou a dobrar tsuru no hospital em que estava internada. cada vez que completava um rezava pela sua recuperação e acreditava que ao fim do milésimo estaria recuperada. infelizmente sadako morreu antes de completar o milésimo mas desde então a tradição de dobrar 1000 tsuru está associada a conquista de um desejo. pela associação a hiroshima o tsuru também simboliza a paz. a história de sadako correu o japão e depois o mundo e todos os dias o museu da paz de hiroshima recebe milhares de tsuru que são exibidos num monumento especial dedicado a todas as crianças que morreram por causa do ataque nuclear no jardim que rodeia o museu.

The story goes that a small child (named Sadako) victim of the Hiroshima nuclear attack started to fold Tsuru at the hospital she was admitted in. Each time he would finish one he would pray for his recovery and believed that by completing 1000 she would be completly recovered. Unfortunatly Sadako died before she completed the 1000th but since then the tradition of folding 1000 Tsuru is linked to the conquest of a wish. By being linked to Hiroshima the Tsuru also simbolyses peace. The sory of Sadako went by Japan and then the world and everyday the Hiroshima Peace Museum receives thousands of Tsuru which are exhibited in a special monument in the garden surrounding the museum in memoriam of every child who died because of the nuclear attack.
